HERITAGE DRY GOODS
Shopkeeper Nicole Desch approached Ore Studios to design a tenant infill project for her new retail venture, Heritage Dry Goods.
The new store is located in the historic downtown corridor of Eugene, Oregon at Broadway and Willamette Streets. The neighborhood, with its growing roster of local businesses, has a strong mercantile past. The storefront, at 861 Willamette, has at various times served as a barbershop, dance studio, and ice creamery.
In order to fully appreciate what remained of the original interior envelope, we first stripped back years of paint and electrical conduit from the existing brick walls. We then painted the ceiling out in a warm, dark gray, minimizing the presence of utilities. New white pine floors were selected for their character and softness, with any distress and patina looked upon favorably in concert with the rough brick walls. Cream-colored enamel lights illuminate the refreshed space.
Store shelving was made to fasten directly into the new floors to preserve the brick walls. The remaining store fixtures are a careful collection of vintage finds picked from auctions and tag sales. The copper-topped cash wrap comes from the original interior of A.E Doyle's 1914 Oregon Electric Station.
