CAPE COD MODERN
The client for this project, a confirmed minimalist, asked us to redesign his dark, diminutive Cape Cod-style cottage in a manner that reflects his preference for contemporary European-style interiors and restrained, bright color. We gut-renovated the principal rooms, enlarging openings between public spaces and creating one large combined kitchen/dining room to accommodate frequent gatherings. The new kitchen features lower cabinets of rift-sawn white oak and upper cabinets finished in white lacquer. The adjacent bathroom has a historically accurate white porcelain wainscot but a decidedly modern wall vanity and penny tile floors. The furnishing of the house is simple and quiet. White, gray, and tan dominate most rooms, with small amounts of strong yellow serving as decoration. Jute rugs and textured fabrics act as a foil for enamel, glass, and injection molded plastic furniture and fixtures. Bare walls and windows are in keeping with the client’s desire for as much light and open space as possible.
